Explore the city of Izmir, set on a steep hill overlooking the bay of the same name. Izmir’s history dates back to 3000 BC, according to the findings of archaeological excavations. Now the third-largest city in Turkey, Izmir has always been known as a trading center and is famous for its port. Enjoy a panoramic drive through this very modern city with its many traces of an ancient past. In the center of the city, you will visit the remains of the old agora (marketplace). Constructed during the rule of Alexander the Great, it is now mostly in ruins. Stop at the the Izmir Museum of History and Art, where you can see an impressive collection of artifacts recovered from area excavations including Bergama, Iasos, Bayrakli (Izmir's original settlement), and Izmir itself.
