Journey back in time to discover the rise of Canada's industrial heritage.
Trois-Rivières was once known as the pulp-and-paper capital of the world and you will discover an important chapter in its history with a visit to Boréalis. This magnificent new center is dedicated to the history of the paper industry. Located in the former water filtration plant of the C.I.P. paper mill, an investment of $7 million has transformed the plant into a venue of exceptional architectural value, including preservation many of the original internal mechanisms. Through multimedia presentations and exhibitions, former lumberjacks, rafts-men and workers tell the story of their travels and their work, revealing their personal histories as well. Discover how a paper machine works and experiment with water pumping and filtration systems. Feel the heat radiating from the machines, breathe in the smell of paper, and hear the noise of the paper-making process. Other highlights include the original underground vaults, the former water tower with fantastic views of the St Maurice River, and the huge multimedia fresco where you will learn all about the forest.
Next, you will visit Forges du Saint-Maurice -- a National Historic Site dedicated to the iron industry in Canada and the first industrial community in the country. Founded in 1730, the forges were in use for more than 150 years before more modern techniques supplanted them.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
