Join an expert Lord of the Rings guide to learn how the magic of the rings was created as you visit locations featured in the film trilogy.
Traveling to Miramar, you'll visit Weta Studios: The Weta Workshop. This exclusive experience offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the creativity of Peter Jackson and his crew. Weta is best known for its work on The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia, Avatar, District 9, The Adventures of Tintin, Elysium, and The Hobbit trilogy. A member of the talented Weta Workshop team shows you the authentic props, models and weapons they have made for various movies. See the different disciplines -- Armour & Costumes, Weapons & Props, Creatures & Make-Up FX, Miniatures & Models, Conceptual Art, and Merchandise. The exhibition space also reveals the history of Weta Workshop and what they have been involved in over the past 20 years. Watch a private screening of a 25-minute behind-the-scenes movie that tells the story and history of the film industry in Wellington.
Then, drive to where the filming of The Lord of the Rings first started. Visit the Outershire, where Frodo and the Hobbits began their journey, and the eerie darkness of Buckland Forest. Many scenes were filmed here, including the ‘Short Cut to the Mushrooms’, ‘Get off the Road’, ‘Hobbits Hideout’, 'Run to the Buckleberry Ferry' and Dunharrow (the movie sets are no longer in place -- these are locations only).
Then visit Wellington’s best lookout atop Mt Victoria, offering 360-degree views of the keyhole harbor and the southernmost capital city in the world." Drive past the Embassy Theatre, down the road where the red carpet was for the premieres held in Wellington (longest red carpet for any premiere).
Please note:
Due to legal and conservation requirements, no film sets remain on location. Photography is not allowed inside the Weta Workshop facility. Filming locations are accessed via unsealed roads and tracks. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
