Enjoy all the good things that the Matakana Coast offers -- stunning scenery, fresh air, great locally-produced food and wine, and charming creativity.
Visit the Shuckle Ferry Oyster Farm to learn about the life cycle of the oyster. You'll harvest your feast and eat as many oysters as you can shuck. Thankfully, a lesson and tools are provided to speed you on your way! Your host is passionate about enjoying fresh, succulent oysters and happily shares the story of his business venture.
Head to the Brick Bay Winery and its Glasshouse Restaurant. A special environment makes Matakana wines unique, as the influences of soil and climate define each vintage. All the wine is grown right here -- paramount to the quality of the wine and a Certified Sustainable vineyard. The focus is on keeping an open leaf canopy to offset humidity. Pruning, fruit selection, leaf-plucking and harvesting operations are all carried out by hand. The Brick Bay style of wine is restrained, elegant, and textural, with exceptional fruit concentration. The winemaking is based on minimal intervention, gentle handling, and the skill of winemaker James Rowan to produce premium wines.
Enjoy lunch and a wine tasting in the architecturally-designed Glasshouse Restaurant, cantilevered over a shimmering lake with lily pads.
Wander along the Sculpture Trail with more than 60 works of art set around the lake, vineyard and native bush -- an ever-changing exhibition of sculpture by leading New Zealand artists.
Please note:
Minimum age is 18 years. The off-season for fresh oysters is January through March; oyster soup and other local seafood will be substituted. This tour is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Auckland.
