This delightful journey encompasses the natural beauty of Tsuruga, featuring a visit to Eiheiji Temple and the intriguing rock formations at Tojinbo.
Fukui lies along the Sea of Japan, not far from Osaka and Kyoto. With the ocean to the west and beautiful snow-capped mountains to the east, Fukui enjoys splendid scenery year-round.
Eiheiji Temple -- the temple of eternal peace -- is the foremost temple for the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism. It is situated in the tree-clad mountains near Fukui City. Founded in 1244, it is a training center for Zen Buddhism. More than 70 large and small structures remain here, with seven main buildings up to about 680 years old. The stillness here is the perfect environment for trainee monks. Follow a monk or a priest on a guided tour arranged exclusively for Seabourn guests. Visit the various halls and participate in a Zen meditation -- a memorable experience.
After lunch, served locally, you will visit Tojinbo. Part of Echizen Kaga Coastline Quasi-National Park, Tojinbo is a fifty-foot-tall cliff of unusually-shaped pentagonal and hexagonal rock columns. Created by a volcanic eruption 130 million years ago and further shaped by the repeated crashing of waves, these extend for about two-thirds of a mile and are one of the only three such rock formations in the world. See if you can spot Lion Rock, Candle Rock and other shapeshifters.
Return to the pier in Tsuruga.
Please note:
Photographing the monks at Eiheiji temple is not allowed. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). You will sit on the floor (required) for the Zen meditation. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Bring local currency, as some vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. As this tour is exclusive for Seabourn guests, the capacity is limited.
