The city of Naha is a showcase for the past and present cultural wonders of Okinawa.
En route to Shurijo Castle Park, pass Naminoue Beach, Ryutan Pond, and the Prefectural Government Office, designed by renowned architect Kisho Kurokawa.
Built in the late 1300s as the palace of the Ryukyu kings, Shuri was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times over the centuries but was ultimately obliterated in the battle of Okinawa in 1945. Reconstructed on the original site using photos, official records and memory for reference, it reopened in 1992 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the imposing Shureimon Gate. Though many parts of the complex were destroyed by a fire in 2019, you are still able to see the unique striking red color of the remaining structures that gives you a taste of the original splendor that surrounded the Ryukyu kings. Before you leave, browse for souvenirs at the Shurijo Castle gift shop.
Next, you will visit Shikinaen Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its exquisite beauty and tranquility. Wander through the meticulously landscaped gardens, featuring traditional Ryukyuan-style architecture, serene ponds, and lush vegetation. Experience the harmony between man-made structures and nature, and appreciate the timeless elegance of Japanese garden design.
