A minibus drive brings you to Colonia del Sacramento -- the oldest city in Uruguay. Colonia was founded by the Portuguese in 1680, at a time when Spain and Portugal were embroiled in numerous confrontations. The two empires bitterly contested ownership of this lovely town for more than a century, and it's easy to see why. Eventually the Treaty of Saint Ildefonso awarded it to Spain.
You'll discover that the Old Town has a lot to say about its colonial past. The streets of Santa Rita, San Gabriel, Matriz Church, San Pedro Road, Bastion del Carmen and the famous Street of Sighs are often used as a backdrop for historical films. These landmarks lie within a maze of cobblestone streets.
A three-course lunch is served at El Charco Bistro, including a glass of wine.
Please note: Travel time to Colonia del Sacramento is a minimum of 2½ hours each way. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
