Your day will start with a transfer from Matarani to Arequipa, also known as "the White City" because of the white volcanic rock used in its buildings.
Appreciate the arches of the Main Square, as well as the City Hall and the cathedral. The latter is the most important neo-Classical religious building in the country, built in the mid-19th century over the ruins of the first Baroque church.
Then, proceed to the beautiful Santa Catalina Convent, founded in 1580. The convent was enlarged over the centuries until it became a city within the city. It measures approximately 215,278 square feet and covers a good-sized city block. During your guided tour, stroll down narrow streets and pass through arched colonnades surrounding courtyards -- some with fountains, flowering plants and trees. See churches, chapels, plazas, interior rooms and common areas.
End your tour by enjoying lunch at a local restaurant. Afterward, you'll commence the approximately two-hour drive back to the pier.
Please note: Guests with special dietary requirements must advise the Destinations Manager on board the ship well prior to the call date. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
