The seas off Iceland’s coast have always offered rich and productive fishing grounds, but during the early and middle part of the 20th century, the fishing industry boomed on the back of a migratory shoaling fish, the herring. Also known as the ‘silver of the sea’, the herring saw Siglufjordur grow from small village to bustling herring town, with an atmosphere akin to a gold-rush. From here, fishermen landed impressive catches, which the women folk then preserved by salting.
Your guide will meet you at the pier and walk with you to the Siglufjordur’s award-winning Herring Era Museum, pointing out elements of local history and culture along the way. As part of your visit, you'll watch the Herring Salting Show - a fun and energetic live performance based on the work of the 'herring girls'.
For a multi-sensory experience, before you walk back to the ship, you can also sample the local herring with some traditional rye bread, washed down with Icelandic schnapps.
