Perched on Scotland's rugged west coast, Oban bewitches visitors with its picturesque harbor full of fishing boats swaying gently against a backdrop of rolling hills and ancient castles. The scent of saltwater mingles with the aroma of fresh seafood, creating an enchanting Scottish coastal experience.
Depart the pier on foot for a guided tour of Oban. Walk up the steep hill to McCaig's Tower, commissioned by a local banker and philanthropist to provide winter work for the local stonemasons. The steep climb is well worth the effort for the views over the busy harbor and out to the nearby islands of Lismore, Mull and others.
From the seafront, the route leads to St Columba's Cathedral, seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. The simple interior of the cathedral contrasts with its bold exterior of pink Peterhead and blue Inverawe granite.
Conclude the day's adventure at the Oban Distillery for a guided tour of one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. Learn about the stages of production of one of Scotland's favorite whiskies. Of course, no distillery tour is complete without the opportunity to taste the final product.
Finally, return to the pier with your guide. Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
Please note: Inside church visit(s) may not be possible if religious services are being held or if precluded by time constraints.
