Skirt the coast of Scapa Flow and head to the smaller South Isles. You'll cross the first of the Churchill Barriers, commissioned during the Second World War to protect Scapa Flow from enemy invasion.
Visit the beautiful, hand-painted Italian Chapel resourcefully built by Italian prisoners of war out of scavenged construction materials. The chapel is a tribute to peace and also to the resilience, ingenuity and skill of the prisoners.
Continue south to the island of South Ronaldsay and on to the pretty village of St Margaret's Hope. Local legend has it that the village is named after Margaret, Maid of Norway, who died near here on her way to marry King Edward II of England. Wander through the historic streets with time to visit the craft shops.
Return to the coach and head back to Kirkwall. Don't miss a visit to jaw-dropping St Magnus Cathedral, built by the Vikings during their 500-year reign over Orkney. Enjoy free time in town before returning to the ship.
