Begin this informative tour through Douglas' hinterland by crossing the Fairy Bridge. No island kingdom is complete without its legends and superstitions, and the Isle of Man is richly endowed with both. It is said that if you cross the bridge without so much as a Laa Mie! (Good day!) to the fairies, you cannot be sure of a safe and pleasant visit.
On foot, you'll follow part of the Raad ny Foillan (the Way of the Gull) -- the Isle of Man's long-distance coastal footpath -- around Scarlett Head. Watch for coastal birds, plants, limestone outcroppings and volcanic rocks. The exposed southern coast is full of historic sites and there are traces of ancient forts and chapels, countryside properties and farms, a World War II radar station and, indeed, the quarry that provided stone for the steps of St Paul's Cathedral in London.
Chapel Hill is home to an Iron Age hillfort, a Viking ship burial ground, and Keeill Vael -- St Michael's Chapel. The latter offers extensive views over the south of the Island.
Return to Douglas by coach, taking in views over the Plains of Heaven -- the central valley -- to the northern hills.
Please note: Tour requires walking approximately four miles over uneven terrain. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Bring walking poles if you wish.
