Ilfracombe, England, United Kingdom

This picturesque town is scattered down the tip of a peninsula encircling a lovely natural harbor on England’s North Devon Coast. It is surrounded by cliffs and topped by three torrs, Capstone, Compass, and Lantern. The latter torr holds the 14th century St. Nicholas’s Chapel, which instead of a steeple raises a lighthouse, said to be Britain’s oldest. The town and its refuge harbor have seen boom and bust cycles, and the architecture reflects these. The 13th century Holy Trinity church is perhaps its most notable building, but there are many Georgian and Victorian examples as well. The town has attracted many artists and writers through the years, and has a rich cultural heritage belying its diminutive size. Besides its own charms, the port provides access to the wider Devon coastline for visitors.
