The volcanic eruption of 1973 almost decimated the fishing fleet of Heimaey but, ironically, it dramatically improved the harbor itself, enlarging it and making it one of the best and most sheltered fishing harbors in Iceland. Board a local boat and cruise past surrounding cliffs on an introduction to Heimaey's geology and its wildlife. Watch for bird colonies with millions of inhabitants and explore caves that can only be visited by boat.
The Westman Islands have one of the largest varieties of sea bird species in Iceland. Nowhere else in the world can such large numbers of puffins be found living in such close proximity to man. The islands are also home to one of the world's largest gannet and guillemot colonies, and numerous other species of nesting sea bird can also be seen.
Cruise into Klettshellir (Cliff Cave) and enjoy the sounds of the sea lapping at the cliffside and the echo of Icelandic tunes bouncing off the cave walls. The natural acoustics provide a sensational auditory experience.
Please note: The boat capacity is 49 passengers; seating capacity (seats and benches) is 40 passengers. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be water-and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and scarf. Tour is weather dependent; sometimes it is not possible to circumnavigate the island but you will still be able to see the bird cliffs from the pier. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
