Start today’s adventure with a walking tour of Old San Juan, a 500-year-old city with cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings and historic forts. The focus of your tour will be on architecture, history, and legends – and along the way you’ll pass through the shopping district.
Walking builds up an appetite, so the last stop of the tour will take you on a culinary experience. Here you’ll learn the origins and history of the mofongo, and even learn how to assemble some.
The chef greets you and offers you a delicious, cold mojito beverage and a tasty appetizer. Then, (s)he will provide you with instructions and all the fixings to plate your own mofongo lunch -- a must-try dish for first-time visitors wanting to sample the local fare. It is a delightful mash of fried green plantains (or cassava or breadfruit) and chicken broth into which chicken (or vegetables upon request) is added. You will discover the magic of the cocina criolla (creole cuisine) by learning about this local favorite, and have fun seasoning, plating, and putting the finishing touches on your own. Savor every bite -- you're halfway to becoming an honorary mofongo expert.
Please note: A piña colada beverage may be substituted for the mojito if mint is unavailable to make the mojito. Minimum age is 10 years. A substantial amount of walking is required in Old San Juan with a guided walking tour that lasts approximately 2 hours. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The Creole kitchen portion of the tour is not an interactive cooking class; your involvement in the food preparation is only the plating of your own mofongo.
Tour does not operate on Fridays.
