Enjoy a guided walk on a portion of Newport's spectacular Cliff Walk Trail, followed by a visit to one of its most elegant mansions.
With New England's rocky shore and crashing surf on one side and Newport's most extravagant mansions on the other, the Cliff Walk remains one of the top attractions in Newport. This serene and picturesque journey is one you won't want to miss -- it is one of America's more iconic coastal trails.
Step inside the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" -- The Breakers -- commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, Chairman and President of the New York Central Railroad. Inspired by the 16th-century palaces of Genoa and Turin, the 70-room Italian Renaissance-style villa (1895) was designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, who directed an international team of craftsmen and artisans.
The mansion is situated on a 13-acre estate overlooking a spectacular view of the rugged Atlantic coastline.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Flash photography, selfie sticks, and tripods are not allowed inside the mansion. Due to the popularity of The Breakers, expect a short wait at the entrance to the mansion. Tour involves a walk of approximately one mile. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. Tour sequence may vary. Mansion tours at The Breakers are self-guided audio tours using the Newport Mansions app, available in English, French, Spanish, German and Mandarin. Participants must bring their own smart device with earbuds and download the app prior to arrival at the mansion. Floor plans, historic photos and other information are also available on the app. Printed house narratives are available at the front door of the mansion.
