Tour the Old Town of St-Pierre to discover the history and heritage of this remote settlement and the small French island on which it lies.
St-Pierre is characterized by its mix of French and North American architectural traditions, fascinating history and the creativity and resilience required of a community perched at the very edge of Canada's maritime provinces yet firmly within the purview of France.
A guided walk showcases St-Pierre's fascinating history, including the Golden Age of Prohibition. The fishing industry's access to some of the richest fishing grounds in the world has created a prosperous economy. Walk along the narrow and colorful streets with your local guide, who will explain why this small toehold is still a territory of France, how life is organized, and many other details that make Saint-Pierre such a singular place.
Along the way, watch for public spaces such as Générale de Gaulle Square and Joffre Square, as well as the Gendarmerie and prison, the courthouse, the cathedral, and the Town Hall. You'll see the oldest house in the city and some late-19th-century middle-class homes. Don't miss the Lebailly Forge blacksmith's shop -- a National Historic Monument. Your guide is also happy to share with you what happened when Prohibition ended, and the Golden Age abruptly turned into a near-miss with total ruin.
Please note: Dress warmly in layered clothing with gloves, a scarf, and a hat; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Terrain includes uneven ground, steps and inclines. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
