The island of Komodo features dramatic landscapes of 2,000-foot craggy mountains, deep arroyos, canyons, savannahs and monsoon rain forests. Busybody cockatoos, large green imperial pigeons, black-napped orioles, sunbirds, flowerpeckers, noisy friarbirds, and shiny black dragoons all live here.
Komodo National Park lies within an area known as the Wallacea and is the domain of a fierce and rare species of badly-behaved reptile that looks like a dinosaur. The Komodo dragon is not even remotely related to either a dinosaur or a dragon but is the remnant of a once widespread ancient order of monitor lizards. Only 5,000 of this protected species remain throughout Komodo and the Wallacea. Measuring up to 11 feet in length and weighing more than 300 pounds, Komodo dragons prey on the deer and wild pigs that inhabit the island. They swim with enthusiasm and, over short distances, are quite swift on land. A particularly endearing trait is that they also sometimes eat their own young.
Step ashore at Komodo National Park for a brief walk (roughly 45 minutes) in search of the Komodo dragon. You will walk just under one mile, accompanied by rangers and an English-speaking guide, to the dragon viewing spot at Hutan Asam. You'll have a chance to take some photos here.
An open bar with soft drinks and mineral water is available to you at the ranger station and reception area.
Please note:
Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Be prepared for a very hot day. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. The Komodo dragons are wild and are not artificially fed by the local authorities. The park rangers will decide which route the trek will follow. Only guests booked on this or another shore excursion are permitted by the authorities to go ashore at Komodo Island.
