Guests will be met by an English-speaking guide at the port and will board their awaiting coach to commence their journey making their way towards Le Plateau, downtown Abidjan. Abidjan is the largest city in Côte d'Ivoire and offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition. Our six-hour city tour will take you to some of the most interesting and popular sights in the city.
The city’s business district, Le Plateau, was referred to as “the Petit Manhattan of West Africa” because it was considered one of the foremost African cities in terms of skyscrapers, fashion, culture and the standard of living. Enjoy the view from your coach and take in some of Le Plateau’s most modern architectural buildings such as St. Paul’s Cathedral.
We'll start our tour with a visit to St Paul's Cathedral, one of the most impressive examples of religious architecture in the city. Built in the early 20th century, this imposing Gothic-style cathedral is a true masterpiece and a must-see for any visitor to Abidjan.
Next, we'll head to the gallery Cecile Fakhoury, a contemporary art space that highlights the vibrant creativity and culture of Côte d'Ivoire. The gallery features an impressive collection of works by talented local and international artists, offering a modern perspective on the country's artistic heritage and dynamic cultural scene.
After exploring the gallery, we'll take a break for a delicious buffet lunch at a local restaurant. Here, you'll be able to sample some of the best local cuisine, including a variety of traditional dishes and mouth-watering desserts.
After lunch, we'll head to the Arts & Crafts Center located in the area of Treichville, where you can shop for souvenirs and other handmade items. The center is home to a wide range of locally made crafts, including beautiful textiles, pottery, and other works of art.
Re-board your coach and return to the ship. By the end of the tour, you'll have a better understanding of the history and culture of Abidjan and have a chance to experience some of the city's most interesting sights and attractions.
Please note:
Photographing military or government installations is not allowed in Ivory Coast. Local logistics can be challenging; please expect to be flexible. Your understanding is appreciated. Your guide will do his/her best to speak English, but please keep in mind that the limited tourism infrastructure here is part of the city's charm, and bear with any language difficulties he/she may encounter. Your guide will likely have a very strong Ivorian accent. Transportation is basic and falls well short of the standard you will find in many other ports. Participants should be in good physical condition; please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the weather is very hot. Wear comfortable walking shoes. This tour is available to wheelchair guests traveling with a collapsible wheelchair, and who are able to make their own way on and off the coach with a companion to assist. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring bottled water and a hat and wear biodegradable sunscreen. Leave all valuables in a safe on board the ship. Bring local currency (euros), as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars.
