This introductory half-day trip around Banjul, Gambia's capital city and surrounding areas will familiarize you with the main places to visit.
Begin with a visit to the National Museum in Banjul depicting the history of Gambia.
Then, take a short drive through the city to see the sights, stopping to visit the general market with much hustle and bustle. Anything from live chickens and vegetables to herbs and wigs can be bought (and sold) here.
Stop by the city's main mosque. You may also have the opportunity to see the main jewelry shop for silver and gold in the city if it's open for daily business.
Stop at the Arch 22; then, continue to Serre-Kunda -- the most densely populated town in the Gambia. Here you will see a demonstration of the locals' tie-dying skills, and the beautiful batik cottons they produce.
Next, head for Bakau, where the first stop will be at a local bar for a light refreshment and at the Tourist Market where a variety of souvenirs are for sale.
Your final stop will be at Katchically Crocodile Pool, where you may be fortunate enough to see the famous reptilian resident, Charlie, who has starred in a British television documentary.
Please note:
Wear comfortable closed-toe walking shoes and long pants. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, and bottled water from the ship. Please be advised that you are not allowed to photograph military sites or personnel; doing so can lead to serious problems with the local authorities; please ask your tour guide's advice before using your camera. Keep your valuables close at the market and in any public area.
