Vopnafjörður is surrounded by amazing nature, cradled by majestic mountains and rocky cliffs, colorful rock faces and dramatic coastlines, rivers and waterfalls. For those who want to experience Iceland's raw nature and do some hiking, this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy both.
Your destination is the beautiful Gljúfursárfoss waterfall, which flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean. Take in an amazing view of the waterfall and the fjord -- gorgeous nature in peaceful and serene natural surroundings.
The Drangsnes Peninsula sits alongside the peaceful Gljúfurár Valley. You'll catch a glimpse of ancient ruins dating back to Viking times. According to the Icelandic sagas, a Viking named Þorsteinn Uxafótur lived here centuries ago, settling the area and farming the land. This scenic shoreline is of great historical importance to Iceland, as the sagas chronicled the early history of a hardy people who faced life head-on here in almost unimaginably harsh conditions.
Drive further along the coast to see the cliffs from another angle. The stunning Virkisvík Cliff is where sea birds happily rest and lay their eggs on precarious toeholds, safe from predators. Walk closer for a view of these absolutely stunning basalt cliffs.
At Skjölfjörur, explore the rocky beach where driftwood lies in sun-bleached piles, and an elephantine bird cliff called Ljósastapi beckons you to walk down the path to for a closer look (time and energy permitting).
Beautiful scenery accompanies you back to Vopnafjörður .
