This blast from the past takes you back in time to the wonderful family-owned Burstarfell Museum -- one of the oldest and best-preserved turf farms of its kind in Iceland.
The turf house, with red gables and grass roof, offers an insight about Iceland's rural history and the hardy people that grow the nation's food. Take a journey through the history of farming and changes of lifestyle and technology for Iceland's farmers from the 18th to the mid-20th century.
Walk around the farm, which has the slightly eerie feeling that the inhabitants left just moments ago. Inside, see the kitchens with open fire rock pits, pantry walls lined with tubs and barrels to store sour milk, skyr and whey, and treasure-filled rooms with antiques and sepia-tone photographs. The fine furnishings of the day authentically depict the era.
This type of architecture and way of life was a given in a country famous for remote, rugged landscapes and a harsh environment.
Please note: Parents traveling with children under the age of 3 must rent a child's car seat from the tour operator. You cannot use your USA car/booster seats as these do not meet Icelandic requirements. Please see the Destinations Manager on board. Surfaces underfoot are grass/mud/gravel and there are uneven pathways throughout. Suitable for guests with mobility limitations with a companion to assist. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf.
