The east coast of Jersey evokes a bygone era and it is the backdrop to the island’s most enduring myths and legends. The eastern skyline presents the dramatic sight of Mont Orgueil Castle, towering over the harbor of Gorey and the Royal Bay of Grouville.
Today you will visit this castle—the jewel in Jersey’s crown and one of the best-preserved castles in Britain. It also happens to offer spectacular views over the island and across the sea to France. The majestic castle, whose name means Mount Pride, was built as the first line of defense against French invasion, but once you have negotiated the ancient passages and stairways to arrive at the highest point, it’s hard to imagine a more peaceful scene. Cast your gaze out over the parapets and the gentle sweep of the bay, where fishing boats bob in the harbor and the hills of Normandy greet you from afar.
After taking in the delightful vistas from the lofty heights of the castle, you’ll return to sea level for a stroll around the charming waterfront and gardens at Gorey.
Please note: Wear comfortable shoes, a wind and waterproof outer shell is recommended for any diverse weather conditions. From the coach drop-off point there is a sloping sanded pathway to the entrance. Inside the castle there are numerous steps to the upper limits. However the castle visit can be enjoyed by remaining on the lower levels where number of steps is minimal.
