Hjelterfjord is a 22-mile/35km fjord from the island of Fedje in the north to Byfjorden in the south, passing from the open sea between many islands to the port of Bergen. Its name comes from the Old Norse word Hjaltland for the Shetland Islands, since this was the shipping route between Bergen and the Shetlands. The islands of Øygarden and Sotra border the fjord on the west, and Radøy, Holsnøy, Herdla and Askøy on the east.
