Today you’ll venture to Castle Rushen, where centuries of history unfold within its ancient walls, before boarding a vintage steam train where the rhythmic chug will transport you through picturesque landscapes, weaving together the island’s past and present in a nostalgic journey through time.
Departing the port, take a scenic drive out of Douglas and head to the south-east of the island. You’ll pass over Fairy Bridge, where according to local folklore, it is considered bad luck to cross over without greeting the fairies believed to live under the bridge. There are tales abound of the misfortune of those who failed to say "laa mie" (good day) to the fairies.
Arrive at Castletown, which traces its origins back to 1090 and is one of the oldest towns in the British Isles. Its narrow streets and small fishing cottages show this area’s ancient past at every corner. Before enjoying some free time to explore this delightful town, visit the magnificent Castle Rushen, a wonderful example of a medieval castle. The exact date when it was built is unknown, though is believed to be around 1200.
The castle served as the residence of the last Norse King of Man, who died in 1266. Part of the castle was destroyed in a siege by Robert the Bruce in 1313 but was rebuilt by Sir William de Montacute in around 1344. In the clock room, formally used as the castle chapel, lies a clock presented by Queen Elizabeth I in 1597, while she held the island in trust pending a dispute. The clock is of simple construction with only one hand but keeps very good "Manx time’."
At Castletown’s railway station, board a steam train on the 125 years old Victorian line. The railway operates with much of the original rolling stock and passengers travel in carriages pulled by the original engines from the 1890’s. From the train, enjoy impressive views of the Isle of Man countryside. Arriving at Douglas railway station, a beautiful red brick Victorian structure, take a short transfer to return to the port.
