A vibrant social tapestry and a rich cultural history are alive and well in Southeast Iceland. This is your chance to learn about contemporary society and culture, as well as a bit of history, geology, glaciology and the country's abundant birdlife.
The drive between Djúpivogur and Höfn includes a short stop at Þvottá (pronounced Thvot-ta) -- site of the first Christian baptism in Iceland. At Hvalnes, see a former farmstead and the home of the largest swan population in Iceland.
Höfn itself, your destination, is a small-but-thriving, picturesque fishing village surrounded by glaciers, beautiful mountains and the ocean.
A comfort stop will be made at the Information Center in Gamlabúð, a merchant's store from the year 1864 that was built in the next fjord over but transported by barge to Höfn in 1897.
Afterwards, embark on a guided walking tour of the scenic harbour during which you’ll learn about the history of the village, the fishing industry and the magnificent nature in the realm of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier.
Please note: Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Views are weather permitting. Parents traveling with children under the age of 3 must rent a child's car seat from the tour operator. You cannot use your USA car/booster seats as these do not meet Icelandic requirements. Please see the Destinations Manager on board.
