The pride of Bergen is the speedy Ulriken Cable Car, which ascends to more than 2,100 feet above sea level in only a few minutes. You will transfer from the pier to the base of the cable car line for the five-minute climb to the top. A snack will be served at the top, and you'll have ample time to snap photos or take a short hike. The cable car pops out above the treeline, offering fantastic 360-degree views of the area.
After you descend back to town, a short drive brings you to the Fantoft Stave Church, first built in AD 1150. The original church was destroyed in 1992 by a fire started by a self-proclaimed devil worshiper; so this replica of Fantoft was rebuilt with lumber from the Sognefjord area north of Bergen, using the exact construction methods used in the Middle Ages. Stave churches are unique to Norway and they were all built before the year 1300; so, this was the first time in 700 years that this type of church was constructed -- a cultural challenge and a testament to Norway's respect for its history and ancient craftsmanship.
Please note: The cable car may close at short notice in event of high winds. Visibility from the top of Mount Ulriken is weather permitting. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair.
