From the picture-postcard harbor in Gialos, it's a short shuttle transfer to the village of Horio (or Chorio). This is where your walking tour of the delightful island town of Symi begins.
Follow Kali Strata, which opens onto Syllogos Square -- the oldest inhabited area. Many of its narrow lanes and picturesque houses here pre-date the neo-Classical era. View the outside of the Old Pharmacy.
Led by your expert guide, you will visit the Symi Archeological & Folklore Museum. The archaeological collection is housed in the Gianneski family mansion, and its artifacts date from the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. There is also a Byzantine collection and some folklore items -- a recreation of a typical Symiot house and local costumes.
Take in the spectacular panoramic views of the harbor and island below as you walk along the cobblestone streets and down the 500 steps that lead back to Gialos. Character-filled two-story houses crowd the path.
Learn about the culture and history of the island as you navigate through the bustling marina, brimming with small shops. Natural sea sponges, spices and typical souvenirs are sold here. You will visit a family-owned sponge business to hear about the diving techniques and various types of natural sponges. Enjoy some free time for shopping.
Please note: Tour requires extensive walking. Terrain includes cobblestone streets, uneven surfaces and many steps. Wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
