Gallipoli is a real gem of the Salentine peninsula, it is situated on the Ionic coast facing the Taranto gulf: this town was founded by the Greeks and conquered by the Romans in 266 b.c. The name of this town comes from the Greek “kalè polis” and it means “charming city”: this definition does not let visitors down at all!
The town is formed by two different parts: the old city with its narrow streets was built on a little island connected with the mainland by a bridge of the 17th century and the more recent part is situated behind the old center. In the more recent part of the town, you can admire the “Greek fountain” (rebuilt in the 16th century, it still preserves decorations from the Greek time) and the Castle built in the 15th century (only external view).
During the tour walk through the narrow streets of the old city center to discover beautiful churches all facing the sea and dedicated to the Virgin Mary from the fishermen and the Cathedral dedicated to St. Agatha (1629-1630). A visit to an underground oil press is also included in the tour. After the tour passengers will have the possibility to remain in town or walk back to the coach with their guide.
