St. Lucia is home to the Pitons, two majestic volcanic spires rising dramatically from the Caribbean Sea. Today you’ll have the chance to explore this special place with a panoramic drive, two different guided hikes, and a local lunch. You’ll leave the day enchanted by this special place and tired by the physical activity (in a good way).
The Pitons predominate over the St. Lucian landscape. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Pitons are visible from virtually every part of the island and providing a distinctive landmark for seafarers. The combination of the Pitons against the backdrop of unspoiled lush and diverse natural tropical vegetation and a varying topography in a coastal setting gives the property its stunning natural beauty.
Board an air-conditioned coach for a 1¾ hour panoramic drive along the island's West Coast Road. You'll pass the small villages of Anse La Raye and Canaries and the town of Soufrière. Your destination is the Gros Piton trailhead. Gros Piton is one of St Lucia's most famous landmarks, standing majestically between Soufrière and Choiseul.
Follow your guide on this strenuous hike on a trail that begins at an elevation of 700 feet and gains About 1,800 feet in elevation in the first 2½ miles. All around you the landscape is alive with natural, cultural and historical charm. There are several caves and lookout points dating back to the days of the brigands.
The trail weaves through three different ecosystems, boasting an Eden-like array of flora and fauna, some of which is endemic to the great mountain. Hike through the rain forest, climbing over large boulders and consistently uneven terrain.
After your almost two-hour hike, you'll drive to the Ladera Resort for a delicious lunch. Take in the views of the Pitons and Jalousie Bay before heading back to Castries and the ship.
Please Note: Minimum age is 12 years. Travel time is a 1¾ hour each way. The route is winding; guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. Ride will be bumpy. Pregnant women or guests with back or neck conditions are not allowed to participate. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is very strenuous. The hike is about two hours and is uphill (quite steep in places) on unpaved, rough walking tracks with many steps, and requires climbing over large boulders. Participants must be very fit, in good health and free of heart, respiratory, back, leg, hip or neck conditions. On Sundays, the lunch at Ladera is a buffet. Maximum weight is 250 lbs. A waiver must be signed to participate.
