Combining the history, culture and industrial heritage, this tour acquaints you with Baie-Comeau and with the big hearts and strong character of the hardy souls living in this remote outpost that, actually, is extremely civilized. The town and region boast a rich religious and cultural heritage that is worth hearing about.
The economy here was initially based on a pulp and paper plant built to control costs for Colonel Robert McCormick's newspaper business -- the Chicago Tribune. Not quite a company town, but highly dependent on the Tribune, Baie Comeau has subsequently managed an exemplary modern pivot to become a high-tech hydroelectricity hub.
Enjoy a guided visit to St-Amélie's Church. It features Quebec's North Shore pink granite and 1,500 square meters of fresco paintings -- five times more than the Sistine Chapel.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
