Kaikoura is the best place in New Zealand to swim with the most acrobatic of all dolphin species -- the dusky dolphin. The dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus) is so named for its dark gray coloring. Here in the waters of Kaikoura, these wild animals often choose to stop and engage with swimmers. They are among the most interactive dolphin species in the world, and this chance to encounter them is absolutely extraordinary.
The grace, beauty and curiosity of these sociable and acrobatic dolphins will take your breath away. It can truly be described as a life-changing experience; you will leave Kaikoura with a renewed sense of awe for the natural environment.
Please note:
A good level of water confidence is required. Prior snorkeling experience is an advantage. Flotation devices such as kickboards and buoyancy aids are available if needed. The crew do not enter the water with you. Dress warmly in layered clothing with a hat and warm footwear; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. A well-fitted wetsuit is supplied. Tour operates rain or shine but may be canceled by the operator in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. Minimum age is 8 years. The dolphins are wild animals and are free to come and go as they please; wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
