This stunning coastal pathway from Corsair Bay to Pony Point takes in beaches and spectacular views of Lyttelton Harbour, Quail Island and Charteris Bay. Learn about Maori culture, the collaboration between Maori and Pakeha, and visit a significant Maori landmark.
You guide will meet you at Lyttelton port, where you will be transported by a 12 seater van to Corsair Bay (a short 5 minute journey) where your walk begins. You guide will provide you with a light day bag, a water bottle, and a set of walking sticks.
Before you set off you will have time to enjoy Corsair Bay, a popular swimming and picnic spot for locals, and use the toilet facilities. The guided walk then will commence with a gentle climb on a track into some pine trees which will then unfold to become a lovely coastal pathway with sailing boats and native birds and plants of New Zealand.
After a leisurely 20-minute walk you will reach Cass Bay, another of Banks Peninsulas quaint and beautiful beaches. You will spend 10 minutes here to have a drink, take some photos, and use the toilet facilities if needed.
The guided walk will continue along a well-formed track, passing boat sheds and following the water’s edge, before zig zagging up to the summit of Pony Point Reserve, where there is a lovely grassy area with picnic tables and benches, native plantings and spectacular harbor views.
This location is of great significance to both Pakeha and Maori, celebrating the goodwill and sharing between the two cultures forged in early colonial times. You will enjoy morning or afternoon tea with breathtaking views at this location, and plenty of history from your local guide.
The return leg is a circular track back to Cass Bay, descending through some gum trees. From here you will be guided back to Corsair Bay, and transported back to Lyttelton Port by van once again.
