Doha, capital of Qatar, is a striking city where old and modern architecture, culture, streetscapes and personalities blend seamlessly.
Take a panoramic drive along the Corniche waterfront road, passing the skyscrapers of West Bay. Snap a photo at 'The Pearl' -- an extraordinary manmade island created in a shape of an oyster. This patch of reclaimed land has set the bar quite high for those seeking a luxury lifestyle in Doha.
You'll pause briefly to take photos at the Souq Waqif market. Traditional garments, spices, handicrafts and souvenirs have been sold here for more than a century. The market was renovated in 2006 to preserve its traditional architecture and atmosphere.
Visit to the iconic Museum of Islamic Arts. Designed by world-renowned architect I.M. Pei, the MIA building has become something of an icon. Standing apart on the waters of the Corniche, it draws influence from traditional Islamic architecture. The building is made from limestone, which plays beautifully with the ever-changing relationship of light and shade. The geometric patterns of the Islamic world adorn the inside space, making for a grand interior. A variety of textures and materials, including wood and stone, have created a suitable environment for the museum's vast collections. With incredible views across the bay, the museum is the cornerstone of Doha's burgeoning cultural scene.
Please note:
Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered. Please err on the side of conservatism with your attire. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Do not take photos of local men and women without first asking permission. Shops at the Souq Waqif are closed during Ramadan.
