It is said that the real India exists in her villages. Urban India, although large and constantly growing, represents only a small portion of this vast nation. In Kerala, rural and urban exist so close together that it is hard to say where one ends and the other begins.
Your tour today takes you to one of Kerala's rural villages -- Vaikom. Located in the district of Kottayam, it is one of the oldest villages in Kerala and an excellent representation of rural life in the region. During your visit, walk through the community and see what life is like here on a typical day. See homes, interact with local people and see the various activities by which they earn their livelihood. Observe ladies weaving coir ropes out of coconut husks, potters at work and straw mats being woven out of pineapple leaves.
You will also visit the local market, temple and the Khadi Weaving Center to delve deeper into what life here is all about.
On your way back to the pier, stop in Kumarakom to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch at the luxurious Zuri Resort & Spa. This ultra-deluxe resort is spread over 18 acres and is located on the banks of Vembanad Lake -- the perfect setting for a quiet lunch after a day filled with activity.
Please note:
Conservative attire is required while visiting temples. Shorts and short skirts are not allowed. Women must have their shoulders covered. Shoes must be removed prior to entering temples. We suggest bringing along a pair of thick socks because the ground may be hot. There are additional charges for usage of cameras at Vaikom Temple to be paid by guests on own - INR 150 for still cameras and INR 250 for video cameras. Photography is prohibited inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Guides in Cochin have a strong accent.
