Participating in a metal torching class in Alaska is a unique and invigorating experience, where the rugged beauty of the Last Frontier serves as an inspiring backdrop for learning the intricate art of manipulating metal through heat and flame, creating both a skillful and adventurous journey into the world of metallurgy.
To start today’s journey, a private van will transport you along the scenic roads of Sitka on the way to the workshop. The winding coastal routes reveal breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean, dense forest, and snow-capped mountains.
When you arrive at your workshop, it’s nearly time to grind, shine, and torch your favorite Southeast Alaskan fish.
Begin by observing your instructor program a fish file on the CNC plasma cutter, then stand back and watch the sparks fly on this state-of-the-art piece of machinery. Once at your workstation, you'll be given a brief safety briefing and a detailed, step-by-step walkthrough on crafting today's exceptional artwork.
Now it's time to create your masterpiece. Using a grinder, design and texture your fish of choice — choose between a halibut or salmon. Next, use a mallet to give your fish a 3D shape. Lastly, turn up the heat on your torch to draw out shades of bronze, purple, and blue. Your creation will be the perfect piece of artwork to take home and hang on the wall, serving as a reminder of your unforgettable Alaskan experience.
