Welcome to Klawock, one of the earliest settlements on Prince of Wales Island, with a rich Native American culture and natural beauty. Today, you'll discover some of the captivating landscapes that define this remote Alaskan community.
On foot, you'll follow the Klawock River Trail through towering trees, with the soothing melody of the river accompanying an introduction to the area's flora and fauna. Home to Klawock Heenya's earliest settlement, the Klawock River is renowned for year-round fishing.
At the Heenya Carving Shed, the artistry and heritage of totem pole carving come to life as you visit the active workshop of master formline artist Jon Rowan. Here, Klawock's next generation of totem carvers learn essential skills, and the shed is a testament to the community's dedication to preserving and sharing traditional craftsmanship. Learn how to select the right tree, details about the traditional and modern carving techniques, and how the community maintains some of the oldest totems in Alaska while continuing to add new poles to their totem history.
Finally, head to Klawock Totem Park and stand among the impressive totem towers. With twenty-one individual pieces of formline art, this is the largest collection of totems in Alaska and a journey through history. Your local guide will share the meaning of these incredible monuments that include story, healing and shame totems, as well as poles representing different Tlingit tribes from around Southeast Alaska.
