Transfer from Matarani to the Mejia Lagoons, located on the coast of Arequipa. An extension of 1,700 acres of important wetlands at the mouth of Tambo River, these lagoons are of great interest to bird-watchers because they are the most significant Peruvian stopover for migratory birds. The Mejia Lagoons are a designated National Sanctuary hosting 141 species of bird, of which 84 are year-round residents, and 57 are migratory. The latter frequent the area only at certain times of the year, when they are escaping the harsh winter of deeply northern or southern latitudes. Of the migratory birds, 17 species come from locations in Peru, four come from other elsewhere in South America, and 34 from North America.
This is a great opportunity to see a huge populations of birds, among which are the rare Chilean flamingo, the Peruvian pelican, black skimmer, Franklin's gull, Harris hawk, the American kestrel, the dolphin gull, sanderlings, the dominion seagull, large white heron and the blue heron, among many, many others.
At the end of your exciting half-day of birdwatching, transfer back to Matarani.
Please note: Dress in layers. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
