The floating port of Manaus, which was built by the English in 1903, was designed to accommodate the annual rise and fall of the Rio Negro. Today you will discover the significant landmarks of this intriguing city.
Visit the Municipal Market, where your local guide will tell you all about the local fish, fruits and medicinal herbs. Drive by the Customs House and hear how this building was prefabricated in Liverpool, England and shipped to Manaus more than a hundred years ago. Watch for the 19th-century Rio Negro Palace, built to be the private residence of a German rubber baron and, later, the Governor's office.
The highlight of your tour is a visit to the lavish Teatro Amazonas Opera House, opened in 1896 and built almost entirely of materials that were shipped in from Europe during the golden era of the rubber boom.
Please note: Rio Negro Palace is closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays; an outside visit will be substituted. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
