Stuðlagil Canyon is one of Iceland's newest and most popular local attractions.
The Canyon itself is about 500m long and became a trendy attraction among local Icelanders around 2020.
Before 2007 when Iceland biggest hydroelectric powerplant was built at Kárahnjúkar, the tourist attraction Stuðlagil did not exist. However, after the Kárahnjúkar Dam was finished, the Glacial River was re-directed, and the stunning Stuðlagil Canyon appeared.
Stuðlar means Basalt Columns and the canyon is one of the largest collections of Basalt Columns in Iceland with between 20 - 30m of columns on each side of the Canyon.
Today the color of the remaining Glacial River can vary upon season, during the summer it is now blue or green, as compared to the normal brown color of glacial rivers when the dam is on overflow or when the snow melts into the river.
Sænautasel Farm was inhabited until 1943, apart from a dark 5-year period after a terrible ashfall from Askja Volcano located in the Northern highlands of Iceland in 1875. Now rebuilt the farm gives an interesting insight into the world of Iceland's older generations as guest can take a step back in time as they enter inside the farm. Traditional refreshments served at the farm.
Notes:
Please note there is a long stairway down to the viewing platform of Stuðlagil. The Canyon is right next to the parking lot, but it is a strenuous walk down and up the stairs.
