North Lewis is steeped in local history and culture. Comunn Eachdraidh Nis was established in 1977 and was the first historical society to be formed in the Western Isles. Now housed in the former Cross Primary School building, the center boasts an accredited museum, two exhibition galleries, a local history archive, a café and a gift shop.
The museum reflects various aspects of island life including crofting, fishing and local industries. Gaelic speaking staff and volunteers will be happy to show you around and teach you a phrase or two in the native language. Let a local crofter teach you about crofting traditions and see first hand how this rich, cultural land is worked. Try some crofting techniques for yourself or just see a highland cow close up in all its beauty.
