Visit the thousand-year-old ruins of Corfe Castle, majestically silhouetted against the skyline. One of Britain's most romantic ruins, Corfe Castle, with its beautiful medieval architecture, dominates a breach in the Purbeck Hills. Edward, the Saxon boy king, was murdered here in AD 978, and King John kept important prisoners and valuable treasures in the towers.
As you explore the picturesque remains of the 'very fair castle,' you are following in the footsteps of kings, knights, soldiers, workmen, servants and prisoners -- the hundreds of thousands of people who have lived at, worked in, fought for or visited Corfe Castle during its 1,000-year history.
Today, Corfe Castle enjoys its position in a quiet village surrounded by beautiful and peaceful countryside. As you take in the splendor of the ruins, it is easy to appreciate that this strategic position was worthy of a lavish and 'modern' royal castle for William the Conqueror and his royal successors.
