About three miles from La Pallice Harbor, Ré Island is one of the jewels of the Charentaise coast. A bridge nearly two miles long links it to the mainland, but it feels like another world. As soon as you reach the Island, you will be won over by the atmosphere and the pretty light it enjoys -- it has inspired many a painter over the centuries.
When Poitou's donkeys come into view, you'll know you're in Saint Martin. This typical fishing port is the capital of Ré Island and is famous for its ramparts and its dreaded penitentiary. After a short, guided walk through Saint Martin de Ré, enjoy some free time to explore the fishing port, the morning food market and the narrow streets, or to simply enjoy a refreshment at one of the numerous cafés (at your own expense).
Your tour ends with a panoramic drive through La Rochelle and a short guided walk in the Old Town. Some additional free time here gives you a chance to get acquainted with the Rebel City's history -- it democratically elected its first mayor in 1199, became Protestant while the rest of France was staunchly Catholic, and was a tax haven protected by the king while rest of the country was taxed onerously. Nowadays, La Rochelle is Europe's largest yachting port -- a fun and fanciful distinction indeed.
