Summertime in Scotland is synonymous with the fantastically colorful, entertaining, and uniquely Scottish Edinburgh Tattoo. Tattoos not your thing? Keep reading -- this isn't what you think! Tattoos totally your thing? Brilliant, but you need to keep reading, too, as this one's a bit different.
The Edinburgh Tattoo outshines whisky, haggis and all the castles combined in the line-up of Scotland's iconic imperatives. As a visitor to this splendid country, don't miss this most profound of traditions. The Tattoo is an evening show held high above the city on the sweeping Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle and includes bagpipers, drummers, marchers, Highland dancers, and a host of other spectacles contributing to non-stop action and spine-tingling thrills.
Traditionally, a 'tattoo' was a drum signal summoning British soldiers back to barracks after a night out. The custom eventually developed into a ceremonial performance of precision military music by massed pipes and drums held a few hours after sunset. The tradition continues with this annual must-see, must-do extravaganza.
Transfer into the city of Edinburgh and venture into the gorgeous sandstone Old Town. Against the majestic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, take your seat and watch a world of outstanding entertainment unfold before you. The lighting effects are simply mind blowing, and the performers are polished, proud and plentiful.
The Tattoo performance ends with the most moving of all Scotland's performances -- the lone piper, spotlit on the battlements, haunting tones reaching out across the darkened arena to wrap around your heart -- a phenomenal memory to carry with you long after the music stops.
After the show, you'll walk back down the Royal Mile to your waiting motorcoach for the transfer back to Leith.
