Your tour starts with a scenic drive through the remarkable landscape of northeast Iceland, as your coach takes you from Husavik into the northern part of the Vatnajokull National Park.
Your first stop will be the spectacular Dettifoss waterfall, around 60 miles southeast of the town. Located on a stretch of the Jokulsa a Fjollum, Iceland’s second longest river, the 330 ft (100 m) wide Dettifoss is regarded as one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. It’s awe-inspiring sediment-rich, glacier-fed waters originate in the Vatnajokull National Park, home to Europe’s second largest ice cap. At Dettifoss, they cascade over a drop of 144 ft (44 m) into the Jokulsargljufur canyon, with a rate of flow in the summer months that averages around 60,000 gallons per second.
Having enjoyed Dettifoss, your tour continues to Asbyrgi, a glacial canyon cut into the surrounding landscape like the hoof print of a giant steed. Its shape gives rise to the story that it was created as Odin's eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, galloped across the country, though in reality it was formed following a catastrophic glacial flooding of the Jokulsa a Fjollum river during the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago. During your stop at Asbyrgi, you will visit the Gljufrastofa Visitor and Information Centre, where you will be able to learn about the regions fascinating history and geology.
Following our visit to Asbyrgi, we’ll retrace our steps back to Husavik, driving along the beautiful Tjornes peninsula for our return to the ship.
Please note: We highly recommend that guests wear good walking/hiking shoes as the area around the waterfall is wet, rugged, and uneven. We also recommend that you wear warm, layered clothing to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion, with an outer layer that is waterproof and windproof. This tour is not advisable for guests who use a wheelchair, or for those with mobility limitations. The order of sites visited may vary.
