Your island introduction begins as you journey by coach to a scenic viewpoint, providing panoramic vistas where you will stop for photos. Continuing, enjoy views of vineyards en route to Hum, the highest hill on Vis at an elevation of 1,925 feet. Pause here to take in views overlooking the island landscape, including the WWII Royal Air Force (RAF) airport.
Speaking of World War II, next head to the bottom of the hill and stop beneath what is known as Tito’s Cave. This cave was the hideout and headquarters for resistance leader and Yugoslavian President Josip Broz Tito. Here in a cavern with two "rooms" outfitted with necessities, Tito lived and worked during the last year of the war, conducting operations of the Partisan army and his own seat of government. If you wish, climb the approximately 300 steps to reach the cave entrance for an opportunity to picture the natural, raw space in its historical context. Though you can’t see the cave entrance from the bottom, your guide will regale you with stories about the fascinating history of this location should you not wish to make the climb.
Rejoin your coach for a drive to Komiza, one of the most beautiful of Croatia’s island villages, known for its traditions in fishing. Survey the small fishermen’s museum, housed in a 16th-century Venetian tower, and soak up the atmosphere of the quaint town with some free time before returning to the pier.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. 150 steps (optional) must be negotiated if you wish to see Titos’ Cave entrance. You cannot enter the cave. No guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day, as weather and atmospheric conditions vary and are beyond the tour operator’s control.
