The Ligurian coast between Cinque Terre and Portovenere is a cultural landscape of great scenic and cultural value. The layout and disposition of the small towns and the shaping of the surrounding landscape, overcoming the disadvantages of a steep, uneven terrain, encapsulate the continuous history of human settlement in this region over the past millennium.
Clinging to the Ligurian cliffs on the west coast of Italy are five lovely towns spaced evenly along the water -- Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
Depart from the pier by chartered boat, heading northward. You will marvel at an apparent defiance of gravity, as most of the villages look as if they are suspended precariously above the sea. Pastel-colored houses, terraced vineyards and groves alive with the aroma of olive trees blend with the fresh ocean breeze to create a truly magical atmosphere.
Arriving at the village of Vernazza, disembark the vessel and begin a guided walking tour of this 1st-century town. The richness of the architecture here denotes a historically higher standard of living than that of the other villages. Free time is afforded to browse in the local shops or relax in a café (at your own expense).
Reboard your chartered boat and proceed to the next stop, the westernmost village and Cinque Terre's beach town -- Monterosso. The town is divided into two distinct parts -- San Cristoforo Hill and the old maritime village protected by a rocky spur. After your guide points out the highlights of Monterosso, you'll stop to sample a glass of excellent local wine and a small slice of the region's specialty -- delicious focaccia bread. Make good use of some free time to explore on your own before you climb back onto the boat and start the journey back to Portovenere.
Please note: Tour operates weather and sea conditions permitting. In the event of inclement weather, the Vernazza visit may be cancelled. Transportation by chartered boat exclusive to Seabourn guests. The boat does not operate in choppy sea conditions; bus and train transportation will be substituted. The train is basic public transport. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. Alternative tours with similar content may be available, including Cinque Terre Adventure by Ferry: A UNESCO Partner Tour.
Not suitable for the guests with mobility issues (especially the wheelchairs and the electric scooters). The boat is not equipped with the proper ramp for the wheelchairs. The ramp of the boat is quite narrow and is constantly in motion, which makes it quite dangerous for people with mobility difficulties to enter/exit the boat. Also, quite a steep entrance and descent from the boat.
