As you depart Nice, enjoy beautiful views of the majestic Alpes Maritimes and the Mediterranean en route to magical St Paul de Vence. The outline of this 16th-century village stands out far above the rolling hills and rich valleys of the Vence countryside. This picturesque town has retained much of its medieval appearance and is typical of the fortified towns that once guarded the Var frontier.
A walk with your guide along the cobblestone streets reveals why St Paul de Vence was "discovered" in the 1920s by painters such as Signac, Modigliani, Bonnard and Soutine. After your guided walking tour, you will have some free time to explore on your own.
Then, you will continue to the Maeght Foundation -- one of the world's most famous museums of modern art. You will see works by Miró, Matisse, Kandinsky, Braque and others, as well as monumental sculptures scattered about the museum's pine-forested grounds. Few museums blend form and content so tastefully and imaginatively.
Take time to reflect on this unusual juxtaposition of medieval and modern as you return to the ship.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Visiting St Paul de Vence requires uphill walking on uneven ground. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience.
