Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum & Torre Annunziata
When Vesuvius erupted on 24 August AD 79, it engulfed the two flourishing Roman towns of Pompei and Herculaneum, as well as the many wealthy villas in the area. These have been progressively excavated and made accessible to the public since the mid-18th century. The vast expanse of the commercial town of Pompei contrasts with the smaller but better--preserved remains of the holiday resort of Herculaneum.
Set out for a 90-minute panoramic drive to the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Here, with a small group (maximum 16 privileged guests) you will discover the remarkable ruins of Pompeii -- a brilliantly preserved ancient Roman town.
Upon arrival, walk with your knowledgeable Pompeii guide through the main archaeological site. (S)he paints a vivid picture of the city's former glory. See the huge forum, grand temples, homes, shops, and other structures that were buried by ash in the great eruption of AD 79.
The Villa of Mysteries is certainly the most famous of the Pompeii excavations. The complex is a rustic residence located outside the city walls, where the processing of agricultural products took place. The owners' residence is an homage to luxury and comfort. There are many decorations and frescoes, but the stand-out is the 55-foot-long, 10-foot-tall pictorial sequence in the dining room. It is believed to depict a Dionysian or Bacchanalian rite (the mysteries from which the villa takes its name) .
Stop at a cameo factory where artisans apply skills handed down for generations, intricately carving seashells, or coral into beautiful jewelry - true works of art and keepsake souvenirs.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, before the relaxing drive back to Naples.
Please note: Travel time to Pompeii is approximately 45 mins - 1 hour each way. Large bags, backpacks, and wheeled bags are not allowed in Pompeii. Extensive walking for approximately three hours over uneven surfaces and cobblestones is required. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses, wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
