A panoramic drive inland brings you to Aix-en-Provence, passing the scenery of southern France en route. This was once the capital of the Provence region and its attractions are many. Set out on a walking tour along the Cours Mirabeau in Aix. This wide avenue is shaded by trees -- a verdant tunnel of foliage protecting pedestrians from the Provençal sun. Aristocratic façades of old mansions line the Cours, and their wrought-iron balconies and finely carved doorways invite the visitor to explore.
View the old Mazarin District begun by Archbishop Michel Mazarin in 1646. You will see a fountain dating back to 1743, particularly noteworthy for producing 93°F water, which the Romans believed had healing properties. Note the different architectural styles of Saint Sauveur Cathedral with its Romanesque nave, Merovingian baptistery, and a Gothic section. These various styles date between the 5th and 18th centuries.
Enjoy some free time to browse in the markets and galleries lining the Cours Mirabeau. You will also have time to purchase lunch (at your own expense). Whatever your interest, the ambience of Aix-en-Provence makes for an enjoyable excursion into France.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, over unpaved, rough terrain with many steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts and capri-length pants are not allowed. Shopping is limited on Sundays, holidays and outside of the high season.
